FABULOUS FRIDAY

Driving past an elementary school this week, I saw this sign out front:

I wonder what they learn about on Thursdays?

FABULOUS FRIDAY

I have had such a gruelling week at the new job! I have read, I think over 12 million if not billion pages of research, summaries, contracts, clauses and projections on the new product. Today is Friday and I am going to make myself a nice cold vodka Martini.

The Fabulous Martini!

The recipe for my fabulous marinti:

Put loads of ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2.5 lidfuls (the lid being from the cocktail shaker) of vodka. Gently shake and set aside to chill even further.

In a chilled martini glass, pour in a drop of dry vermouth, swirl around the glass, and then dump out the excess.

I like my Martini dirty, so I add a spoonful of olive brine.

Strain the chilled vodka into the martini glass. Add three of the biggest green olives available, preferably stuffed with bleu cheese.

Drink up before it gets warm!

What is the recipe for your favourite wind-down cocktail?
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that there are two secrets to a good Martini. The first make sure your glass, and vodka are exceptionally well chilled. The second is to always use a top shelf vodka. Stoli makes the classic Ab Fab martini, but Belvedere and Grey Goose also make an excellent option. Is suggested to not use potato based vodka as some Polish vodka tend to be made. They are perfect for sipping straight on the rocks, but not for a Martini

FABULOUS FRIDAY

Today is an exceptionally fabulous day for three reasons, the first one being because it is Friday.

The second one is that today is my very last day making money for a "the man." I am going back into charity work, marketing and fundraising for an Alzheimer's association. So my talents will once again be put to use for good instead of evil.

The third and most fabulous thing is that today is my mom's birthday. She is turning a landmark year, which she has insisted on my not revealing on here or anywhere else. So I Xplicitly cannot Tell You.

I have a fabulous photo of her when she was 18 that I was going to post here, but I have yet to scan it. It looks something like this:

Only the photo was in black and white.

FABULOUS FRIDAY - High Society

No, not High Society the musical movie. High Society the short-lived TV sitcom starring Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell. You know the show where the producers swore up and down they were NOT trying to imitate Ab Fab?

It only lasted 13 episodes before it was cancelled, however it is still exceptionally popular and the topic of discussion for many internet TV forums.

The scene that I remember to this day as one is when Ellie (Jean Smart) and Dot (Mary McDonnell) attempt to make a dinner for Dot's son. Watch 2:38 - 4:38 in the clip below for two minutes of roll on the floor laugh out loud laughter.

FABULOUS FRIDAY - oops

Oops.
I seem to say that a lot. When did I become so technologically disabled that the actual words of my 30 Rock post didn't appear?

Not only did they not appear on the post, they were kidnapped by gypsies and sold into white slavery.

This 'oops' is exactly the reason why I love 30 Rock. It makes me forget, or at least feel better that I have no idea what is going in the real world.

30 Rock is witty, without making a point that the actors are being witty. Which means that if you don't catch the joke first time, you have something to look forward to the 25th time you watch that episode on DVD.

I almost forgot! Tina Fey does the best vocal impression of Condoleeza Rice.

The other day I was playing boss at a work-related cocktail party. I was having the most interesting & civilised conversation with an 85 year-old Englishman right up until he stated that the person he would most like to have a conversation with was Condoleeza Rice.

At that exact moment, Tina Fey's vocal impression replayed in my head and I burst out into laughter and literally, had to walk away. The Englishman was left standing there alone in partial shock. Thank goodness most of my staff already think I am a bitch or else the incident might have made me look rude.

Thank you, Tina Fey.

Fabulous Friday

Intitially for today's installment of Fabulous Friday, I set out to tell you how fabulous the TV show 30 Rock is, however one sentence into the post, I recieved an e-mail confirming a certain Hula Hank favourite that is going to be performing the 2008 Beijing Olympics theme song during tonight's Opening Ceremony.

Although tonight's specifically commissioned Olympic theme song is still a highly gaurded secret, it has been confirmed that
SARAH BRIGHTMAN will be performing the secret theme song along with Chinese singer Liu Huan.

There is no information as to what Ms Brightman will be
wearing. Is she going to go for her new 'Symphony' image or will it be a specially designed frock to honour the Olympic host nation?

Whatever she sings and whatever she wears, Sarah Brightman never fails to deliver pure fabulousity.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony begins tonight, 08/08/08 at 8:08pm.

Fabulous Friday

Let’s talk about the most amazing entrée, starter, appetizer, canapé, nibble or nosh I have ever had and will only ever eat again:

Cauliflower panna cotta with caviar

There is nothing more fabulous in the world (besides me pretending to be Mama Rose). I pledge to begin every evening meal with cauliflower panna cotta with caviar.

The delicate flavours of the pureed cauliflower and cream are enough to allow the caviar to shine. The salty crispness of the caviar allows the normally bland taste and texture of pureed cauliflower to morph into a soft and luxurious delight.

These two belong together.

Fabulous Friday!

It is Friday and it is FABULOUS!

Here's why.

After about a week of procrastination, I have just officially obtained tickets to 9 to 5: The Musical! Front and centre of the mezzanine. So if you will also be at the theatre on Saturday the 27th of September, stop by and say "Hello."

Since we are travelling over 14,000 miles to be there, we may be a little thirsty so it wouldn't hurt to buy us a drink.

Fabulous Friday (DELAYED)

Today on Fabulous Friday: TB… That’s right: TB! Tuberculosis! Consumption! Is there a more fabulous way to die?

The romanticism of such languish literature, ballet, opera and theatre has made dying of consumption something of a status marker of the elite. It was said that artists became more creative, women became more beautiful and men more virile (or was it ‘vile’?).

Look to Marguerite in Lady of the Camellias, Mimi in La Boheme, Whatsherface in La Traviata and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge. A few bloody coughs in a frilly white handkerchief and old loves rush to your side, wealthy men buy you fur coats and the best part of all: In your final moments before death, one always has enough energy for a romantic dance or aria before collapsing in a delicately positioned heap atop a chaise lounge.

Fabulous, right?

Tuberculosis, or consumption as it was once called, is a deadly infectious disease that most commonly attacks the lungs. At least one third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis (that is over 2 billion people!), and one new infection takes place every second.

That is a lot of arias to be sung.

Fabulous Friday

Today I had to make a very tough business decision. Due to this decision I am having trouble thinking of fabulous things for Fabulous Friday... What Would Oprah Do (WWOD)?

And where is my assistant with my martini?

Martinis are fabulous! Let's all have a martini, and wear diamonds whilst a Mae West movie is playing in the background.... in Paris.

Now that would be a Fabulous Friday!

Fabulous Friday... on Sunday

I can't think of anyone more fabulous than Sarah Brightman. She has has the voice of an angel and a wardrobe to match.

Today on Fabulous Friday, we will take a look at the many different faces of Sarah Brightman.

First we take a look at early Sarah Brightman, with a disco hit under her belt, she lived everyday as a sequined space explorer looking for love:

Once back on Earth, Sarah Brightman became the Sea Siren:

Then her fingers got all wrinkly from the water and she decided to become an Insect Spy:

After someone pulled the wings off of her fly suit, she developed into the Earth Mother:

When all the apples had been eaten off the tree, Sarah Brightman gained enlightenment and was crowned Lunar Goddess:

After years of bouncing around almost weightless on the moon, she needed to feel the earth between her toes and she morphed into the Queen of the Desert Harem:

After the sun bleached out Sarah's raven locks, she fled to the forest where she was worshipped as the Gothic Faerie Queen (ps - Don't you just love the dress?)

I cannot wait to see what visual delights the Symphony World Tour will hold... I only hope that it is not the same grande finale for the third tour in a row.

Fabulous Friday.... Now 50% Off!

Fabulous Friday snuck up on me this week! I wake up on Monday and by the time I get to my offices, it is Friday… Seriously.

Yesterday I had the sudden inspiration to get a new pair of glasses, so I dragged my assistant out of the office and down onto the streets to hit all the eyeglasses shops. After trying on about 350,000 pairs of spectacles, I came to the decision I look good in absolutely anything that D&G produce.

The problem is: I am cheap. I am a fierce bitch, but I am also a cheap bastard.

I refuse to pay retail for anything. I was in absolute heaven after 9/11 when people stopped buying anything. Consumers first cut out any luxury or designer labels and shops such as Barney’s became desperate for customers. I found Dolce & Gabbana pants for 70% off, Gucci shoes for just under $55 and a beautiful cashmere sweater: $80.

I am no different when it comes to my eyeglasses. Eyeglasses are a double whammy as you first have to pay for the frames, then for the lenses. Even if you purchase the frames for half price, you still have to pay full price for the lenses. This does not make me happy.

Fortunately, right before my assistant and I left for the Great Glasses Search, one of my staffers gave me info about a website where you can order glasses at a discounted price and also get the lenses at a huge discount. I immediately asked this staffer to have my children.

So my assistant and I made the rounds to all the eyewear shops in the city entering each one like a tornado. Grabbing glasses, trying them on and inconspicuously writing down the model number and price so that when I get onto the website I can secretly have a thrill knowing exactly how much money I will be saving.

Is today’s Fabulous Friday about glasses? No! It is about saving over 50% on a medically necessary item. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Lenscrafters.

Fabulous Friday... On Monday!

Today’s Fabulous Friday topic is… Omelettes!!

Omelettes are a versatile anytime food and have limitless varieties, but Ok, Ok, omelettes are not terribly fabulous.

Who here learned how to make an omelette in school? It was complicated! You had to let the egg set in the pan, then lift to let the raw egg fall underneath so that it may cook. Then when it was all done, you had to somehow fold it over without breaking it and flip it onto a plate.

Let’s not even mention the water or milk debate.

I had completely given up on the omelette ages ago, until last year when I vacationed at a nameless tropical resort and every morning was given an omelette made to order. These cooks used the same techniques I used in school, only they made it look so simple.

Once I got back home I rushed out and bought the best omelette pan I could find, and set off ready to make mass orders of omelettes. In my mind, just by watching these cooks for 10 days, combined with a faded memory of middle school home ec, was all the practice I needed.

I arranged a Sunday brunch for seven people, which included croissants, jam, sausages, bacon, has browns, freshly squeezed orange juice and the piece de la resistance… made to order omelettes, cooked by moi!

In my mind, I was prepared. I was Martha Stewart, I believed that all the ingredients were fresh, perfectly prepared and, best of all, everything came perfect.

My bubble quickly burst when the first omelette ended being more like omelette flavoured scrambled eggs. No worries, the first one is always the test round.

Well, normally the first round is the test round, in this case rounds 1 - 6 were also test rounds. Each one coming out broken, burnt, raw, over cooked or scrambled.

By round 7, I had finally somewhat perfected the art of omelette making.. Or at least the art of making the omelette resemble an actual omelette. Thank goodness the last one was for me.

After that traumatic brunch, I put away the pan and apron and retired from omelette making.

Last week, I came across a clip of Julia Child teaching us how to properly make an omelette. She used techniques I had never seen before and it was all over in less than 30 seconds… wait, are we still talking about omelettes?

Julia Child revolutionised omelette making to me! She has reinspired me to not give up on the omelette and in return, for the past week, I have not been able to stop making omelettes!

A new world has opened up to me, and that is Fabulous.

Fabulous Friday!!!!

As promised, today is FABULOUS FRIDAY. Dedicated to all things fabulous, and by ‘fabulous’, I mean things that I love.

First up is this clip from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Which due to my incredible lack of blogging technologically efficiency, will appear in the post above this one.

Also, please note, that it IS in fact, already Friday in Australia.
